P15 million also for wushu winners?

- Gerry Carpio -

BEIJING – If Julian Camacho heard it right, the Filipino bets competing in the demonstration sport of wushu will also receive P15 million for every gold.

Wushu president Julian Camacho said the President, during her visit here, had given her nod for a bonus similar to what gold medal winners in the regular sports will get.

During her meeting with Philippine sports officials, Camacho told the President his wushu artists are also competing in Beijing.

“If they win the gold, they also win P15 million,” the President was quoted by Camacho as saying.

However, chef de mission Monico Puentevella had his reservations. I don’t know about that. Kung meron nga, baka ibinulong lang.”

If the President gave her word on the bonus, the wushu artists may yet receive the gold medal incentive from Malacañang and other sources.

The President had earlier pledged P4.5 million for every gold medal won in the Beijing Games, increasing the reward to P15 million made through donation from   sponsors and through government incentive under Republic Act 9064 worth P5 million.

The top Filipino entry in wushu is world champion Willy Wang who is competing in the taulu category. The other bets are Mary Jane Estimar, Mariane Mariano and Benjie Rivera in the sanshou event.

Bowler Arianne Cerdena was awarded P1 million for winning the gold when the event was held as a demonstraion sport in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

After watching the training session of woman weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who was competing in the 58kg category yesterday, President Arroyo told the 17-year-old lass:“If you don’t make it here, get in London (Olympics in 2012),” Puentevella quoted the President as saying. The President is going by the decision of PSC chairman Butch Ramirez and weightlifting president Monico Puentevella to allow her to continue training in China after the Olympics.

On her tour of the Olympic venues, President Arroyo watched the swimming events at the National Aquatics Center, better known as the Water Cube, where American Michael Phelps broke the world and Olympic record in the 400m individual medley.

She also watched the practice sessions of Filipino divers Ryan Rexel Fabriga and Sheila Mae Perez who are competing in the 10m platform diving (Aug. 22) and 3m springboard event (Aug.15), respectively.

Personal notes: Chinese volunteers here are great examples of service-oriented people you usually find in 5-star hotels and international airlines. I was out of coverage since Aug. 8 when I lost my triband cellphone, the only cellphone I can use for local calls. Luckily, a young volunteer at the Help Desk found it and reported it to the lost and found section. I did not know about it until my friend Ming Ding, from the China Commercial News in Manila and also here in Beijing, was trying to call me up but the one who received the call was a Chinese Chen Yi Fan, who is an international studies student of the Beijing University, one of the top 15 universities in the world. A Filipino would not usually bother to go to a lost and found section to report a loss, if you know what I mean. Two Chinese friends made it easy enough for me. Chen, who majors in Spanish, is a third year student. Xie-xie, thank you, muchas gracias, amigo.
