Lion King NCAA’s player of week
Sam Ekwe of San Beda was chosen by the NCAA Press Corps as its Player of the Week after the Nigerian behemoth dished out a monster performance in their 71-67 win over the Letran Knights at the close of the first round of the 84th NCAA elimination.
Ekwe scored a season-high 25 points, his best offensive game since pouring 26 points in a rout of Perpetual Help last year.
The 2006 Rookie-MVP winner topped his amazing effort with 17 rebounds and four blocks to easily gain the nod of the group of sportswriters regularly covering the NCAA games.
“You just have to believe that your shots will go in,” said Ekwe on his explosive game versus the Knights.
With that game, Ekwe somehow redeemed himself for playing with a wrong set of uniform, causing the forfeiture of their match against the St. Benilde Blazers.
“I don’t dwell in the past. We just have to think of the past as a learning experience,” said the gentle giant.
Ekwe edged Jose Rizal counterpart James Sena for the honor.
Sena, a 19-year-old four-year league veteran, scored 14 points including the game-winning basket in a 60-58 decision over Philippine Christian U.
