Chinese, Russians tough – Tañamor

-

Harry Tañamor, the lone Filipino boxer in the Beijing Olympics, picks the Chinese and Russians as his chief rivals in his quest for the elusive gold medal.

He, however, vowed to give his best shot in the light flyweight division in a bid to end the country’s gold medal drought in the quadrennial games.

Although he missed one big tournament in his Olympic buildup, Tañamor remains confident of his chances, saying he has trained and prepared well.

“I will do everything I can to win,” said Tañamor, adding he could handle the pressure despite being the lone RP boxer in the Games.

Aside from Tañamor, the other soldier-Olympians competing in the Beijing Games, slated Aug. 8-24, are Cpl. Marestella Torres (athletics) and Airman First Class Tshomlee Go (taekwondo).

Tañamor, who gained a ticket to Beijing with a silver medal finish in last year’s World Championship in Chicago, will climb the ring on Aug. 13.

It will be his second stint in the Olympics after reaching the quarters in the Athens Games.

Yano, for his part, called on the people to support and pray, not only for Tañamor, but for the rest of the 15-man RP athletic contingent as well.

He hinted at giving rank promotions to the soldier-athletes who will win medals in the games.

“Maybe not only one rank higher, because we know the Olympics and how difficult it is to participate there,” he said.– James Mananghaya
