Pacquiao orders 9 p.m. curfew in LA camp

- Abac Cordero -

As the odds soared to his favor, Manny Pacquiao continued to train in high gear, sparring 10 rounds Monday at the Wild Card Gym then giving out orders of a 9 p.m. curfew at his apartment unit in Los Angeles.

After a one-day promo tour in Berkeley, California last Saturday and resting the following day, it was business as usual for Pacquiao at the Hollywood gym where he went 10 rounds with three sparring partners.

It was the same Rodriguez-Gonzales-Quinones trio that kept the Pinoy icon busy up on the ring as he tried to work on his speed, both with his hands and feet, and a few combinations.

Pacquiao is on his third week of sparring, and so far he’s logged in 59 rounds. He did 11 the day before he left for Berkeley, only because he practically begged his trainer Freddie Roach for an extra round.

This week or probably the next, Pacquiao should begin sparring for 12 rounds, just 23 days before he tries to wrest the WBC lightweight crown from David Diaz at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

He spars behind closed doors.

Monday evening, from his posh La Palazzo apartment in La Brea, Pacquiao said everything’s working out fine. He welcomed news that the fight odds continued to soar higher and higher to his favor.

“But I don’t have anything to do with that,” he said by way of chatting over the Internet as he took it easy after dinner, playing darts, taking some calls and looking over some paper work.

Pacquiao said he was busy preparing and screening the long, start-studded list of family and friends who will be gifted with fight tickets priced as high as $600 to as low as a hundred bucks.

“Before he used to do this thing so close to the fight. But now he’s doing it earlier. He said he doesn’t want to worry about it later on,” said his LA-based assistant Winchell Campos.

Starting Monday, it’s lights out inside the apartment at 9 p.m. Only a handful are allowed to stay. They are trainers Buboy Fernandez and Nonoy Neri, Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin Gacal, ex-boxers Vernie Torres and Jovy Jalog, GenSan buddies Roger Fernandez and Noel Lautengco, and Campos.

No exceptions.
