Ateneo frustrated Univ. of San Jose-Recoletos with a solid all-around game as it essayed a 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-13 victory to sweep the quarterfinal round of the Shakey’s V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.
Thai import Em-orn Phanusit and Ma. Rosario Soriano took over again in offense and finished with 25 and 22 points, respectively, while the rest of the Lady Eagles limited the Cebuanos to 13 points in the fourth to fashion out the victory in 1:42.
That put USJ-R into a must-win game against ousted Univ. of St. La Salle-Bacolod at the close of the single round quarters tomorrow.
Lyceum earlier booted out USLS, 25-16, 18-25, 25-23, 25-10, but will fall into a knockout match with USJ-R if the Cebuanos prevail over the Bacolod spikers for the league’s 3-of-5 incentive rule.
Lyceum survived a tough third set duel then dominated USLS in the fourth to annex the victory, close out with a 4-1 card and end the Lady Stingers’ semis bid in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision.
The Lady Pirates pounced on three USLS errors in the third frame to draw level at 22 before Jane Jarin connected on back-to-back hits and Beverly Boto scored on a kill against Bacolod’s Patty Orendain’s block.
The Lady Stingers never recovered from that sorry third set setback as the Pirates reasserted their domination behind Boto and Jarin to race to a 17-5 lead before cruising to the victory in the league backed by Active White skin whitening products, Mail and More, ICT Call Center, 100Plus Energy Drink, Mikasa and Accel.
