Villar Cup prov’l bets to get free lodging
The Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) is providing free hotel accommodation to the top player of each province participating in the first Senate President Manny Villar Cup’s Search for the New Billiards Idol Sipag at Tiyaga Edition unfolding May 6 at the Sports Center of StarMall Alabang in
Meanwhile, a huge field is expected to vie for top honors in the tournament, including the P200,000 prize slated in the five-day event highlighting the month-long celebration of the Philippine Billiards Holidays.
“We at the BMPAP want to strengthen our grassroots base, so we are really looking to have players from the provinces taking part in this event,” said BMPAP president Vic Rodriguez.

Pangasinan, through Dagupan City Sangguniang Kabataan president Carlo Fernandez, will send the top five finishers in the just-concluded Bangus Festival Billiards Tournament, which attracted a total of 119 participants.
“Just like what Mr. Perry Mariano said, BMPAP is for the Filipino players, so we are first developing our grassroots base that’s why we’re not yet inviting foreign players, but we’ll soon do. Anyway, the best billiards players in the world are Filipinos so why bother,” said Rodriguez.
Apart from the Billiards Idol ST Edition, the Villar Cup will also have the Top Gun Challenge featuring 24 of the country’s top cue artists led by former world champions Efren “Bata” Reyes and Ronnie Alcano.
Joining Alcano and Reyes in vying for the top purse worth P400,000 are current word no.1 Dennis Orcollo, 2007 World Pool Championship runner-up Roberto Gomez, former Asian Games gold medalist Gandy Valle, reigning national titlist Lee Van Corteza and veteran campaigners Warren Kiamco, Rodolfo Luat, Ramil Gallego, Eduardo Villanueva and Roel Esquillo
Rounding up the field are rising stars Joven Bustamante, Carlo Biado, Jharome Pena, Russian Petiza, Benjie Guevarra, Ricky Zerna, Jundel Mason, Elmer Haya, Panfilo Damuag, Godofredo Ducanes,Cebu’s William Chua and 2007 national juniors champion Mark Mendoza.

“Russian is already ripe to join the league of our elite players, and his winning the fifth leg of the Billiards Idol, along with his strong fifth place finish the San Miguel Beer-Quezon City 9-Ball Championship, more than proved it,” said Perry Mariano.
