Elite athletes dorm to rise in Philsports
By the last quarter of the year, the country’s elite athletes, including the Olympians, will live and train under one roof.
“We will put all our athletes at our dorm at the Ultra because we expect Brent’s contract to expire by that time,” said Philippine Sports Commission chair Butch Ramirez, referring to

The RP athletes, numbering to more than a thousand, are currently housed at five separate dormitories with the bulk billeted at the Ultra and at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

The Rizal Sports Complex can house as many as 200 athletes while Ultra has 100 rooms.
If the plan to make Brent as the athletes’ new main dorm pushes through, it can easily house all 1,000 athletes and possibly more.
Like Ramirez, Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. also envisioned housing all Filipino athletes in one place.
Meanwhile, Ramirez said the sports agency would monitor all five dormitories at least once a week to ensure the athletes live in a clean and comfortable dorms.
“We will have a select group which will visit our dormitories maybe once or twice a week and maybe provide their basic needs there to make it more comfortable for the athletes,” said Ramirez.
“This is to let our athletes feel we care for them,” he added.
Ramirez said they also tasked PSC consultants Elma Muros-Posadas, Enrique Beech and Eduardo Pacheco to monitor athletes and even coaches who might be breaking house rules.
“We will exercise our oversight function without being offensive to our athletes and coaches,” warned Ramirez. Ramirez also bared plans of repairing the velodrome at the Amoranto Complex in Quezon City and the possible construction of a new venue for sepak takraw, which could be worth P5 million. – Joey Villar
