Uy third in tough BMW Golf Cup in Sydney

-

Jerry Uy, the Philippine representative to the men’s A division, claimed third place honors in the recently concluded BMW Golf Cup International 2007 in two tough courses in New South Wales golf complex in Sydney, Australia.

Uy, a 12-handicapper and customer of Klassik BMW, scored 102 points after playing three days in challenging conditions against 43 other competitors from around the world.

The Philippine team composed of Uy, Victor Eusebio (men’s B) and Rosalie Heo (ladies’ division) took an impressive finish in the team event, taking fourth place in a tie with host Australia in what is now recognized as the world’s largest amateur golf tournament.

“I can’t believe I placed third,” said Uy, at 30, one of the youngest players in the fold.

The BMW Golf Cup International attracts around 120,000 golfers each year as each BMW subsidiary hosts its own national finals. Winners of the national finals then have the privilege of representing their country in the annual finals. This golf tournament is one of the major sporting events of the BMW Group.

Josef Kauer of Austria won the title in mens’ A class while Sooi Yee Chiang of Malaysia won by a single point in the Men’s B division. Denise Pavlikova topped the ladies’ division. The team event was ruled by Austria with South Africa and Malaysia finishing second and third, respectively.

“Golf is especially important for BMW. It represents a sport many of our customers play. It is also a sport that stands for precision, aesthetic and performance and is practiced all around the world,” said Stefan Krause,a member of the board of management, sales and marketing of BMW Group.

The tournament took place on the La Perouse and St. Michael’s courses which have spectacular views. La Perouse in particular was described by former World No. 1 Greg Norman, as “one of the greatest oceanfront golf courses in the world.”

Aside from the world-famous course and first-class accommodations at the Westin in Sydney, another tournament highlight was the visit of the 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell.

Campbell played several holes and conducted a golfing clinic for the BMW Golf Cup International competitors.
