Japanese up; Alcantara, pal advance

- Joey Villar -

Japanese qualifiers Kaede Hayase and Riko Fujioka downed their respective foes yesterday to advance to the second round of the Phinma International ITF Junior Circuit at the Rizal Tennis Center.

Hayase came back from a first set down to trounce Juan Yu Chu of Chinese Taipei, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (0), while Fujioka smashed lucky loser countryman Yoko Nagai, 6-2, 6-3.

In boys’ doubles, Week 2 losing finalists top seed Francis Casey Alcantara and James Duckworth of Australia waylaid Iben Zulkarnain of Indonesia and Masato Shiga, 6-1, 6-2, to set to motion their title bid.

In boys’ singles, Thai Nuttorn Tanchainant and Adirek Khundanpinitwang and Korean Lee Won Hak also advance to the next round.

Tanchainant walloped Italian qualifier Luca Masiello, 6-0, 6-1, Khundanpinitwang slammed Hong Kong’s Yam Chun Ming, 6-1, 6-0, and Lee downed Chinese Taipei’s Li Chieh Lin, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Tanchainant will face third seed Pablo Olivarez II of RP, who trounced Malaysia’s Lee Christian Oliver, 6-4, 6-3, while Khundanpinitwang stopped first round sensation Chinese Taipei’s Chang Yu Chi, who stunned fourth pick Wee Min Sylvester of Singapore, 6-3, 6-3.

Lee, for his part, squares off with Croatian No. 8 Vedran Ljubicic of Croatia, who eliminated Blake Brookman of Australia, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Filipino Akio Sy was leading, 5-7, 6-4, 5-4, against Australian Benjamin Wagland when a sudden downpour delayed play.

Sy was one of the seven Filipinos still in the hunt for the Week 2 title, including Alcantara, who lost to Russian qualifier Artem Ilyushin in the Week 1 finale, No. 2 Ralph Kevin Barte and Olivarez.

The other remaining RP bets in the event are Joshua Ho, Bambi Zoleta and Maria Regina Santiago.
