Pinoy masters roll past rivals in US Open
Efren “Bata” Reyes, Francisco “Django” Bustamante and Ronnie Alcano rolled past their respective rivals with relative ease as the
Reyes, the former world 9-ball champion, thumped Jim Faircloth, 11-3, to arrange a second round duel with Marc Vidal in the lower half of the third bracket in the four-division field which attracted 223 of the world’s finest cue artists. Vidal held off Tommy Hernandez.
Bustamante, the former world No. 1, also had an easy outing against David Rowell, fashioning out an 11-4 rout to set up a clash with Richie Orem, who drew an opening round bye.
Alcano, bidding to add the title to his world 8-ball and 8-ball crowns, whipped Ryan Hershman, 11-2, for a second round faceoff with Paddy McLaughlin, who edged Carie Dunn, 11-9.
Jose Parica, Lee Van Corteza and Warren Kiamco also breezed through with victories over John Harris, 11-0, Shawn Keaton, 11-4, and Georgio Margola, 11-10, respectively, in Bracket 3.
But the six Filipinos, priming up for next month’s World Championship in
Rodolfo Luat and Dennis Orcollo also stamped their class over Hunter Lombardo and Cliff Joyner, respectively, in Bracket 2.
Former world 9-ball champion Alex Pagulayan found himself the lone RP entry in Bracket 1, beating Carsten Due, 11-3, for a second round clash with Frank Alvarez, who whipped Mark Panlovic, 11-5.
Ramil Gallego was the lone RP bet who dropped his opening day match, bowing to Markus Juva, 5-11, and dropping to the loser’s side of the tournament.
At stake in the US Open is a whopping $50,000 purse for the champion.
Others advancing were Ernesto Dominguez, Jeremy Jones and Tony Robles in Group 1, Earl Strickland, John Schmidt, Ralf Souquet and Johnny Archer in Group 2, Thorsten Hohmann and Niels Feijen in Group 3, and Rodney Morris, Mike Davis, Nick Varner, Corey Deuel and Marcus Chamat in Group 4. — end it//thanks
