Uichico, Vargas lead honorees in PBA Press Corps rites tonite
Past and present PBA officials and some league stars gather tonight as the PBA Press Corps holds the 2007 edition of its annual awards tonight at Bayview Park Hotel on
Ginebra coach Jong Uichico and PBA board chairman Ricky Vargas are the major awardees as Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year, respectively.
Uichico is to receive the Baby Dalupan Trophy while Vargas the Danny Floro Trophy in the PBAPC bash co-presented by San Miguel Corp. and Talk n Text.

The family and friends of the late Emilio “Jun” Bernardino are to grace the occasion as the long-time league commissioner will be posthumously bestowed the Hall of Fame award.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan is the guest of honor and speaker in the awards night where Wynne Arboleda, Gary David and Christian Calaguio will be among players to be feted by the press corps.
Arboleda is the Defensive Player of the Year, David is Comeback Player of the Year and Calaguio is Mr. Quality Minutes.
Other players taking center stage are Kelly Williams,
San Miguel Corp., Talk n Text, Accel, ABC-5 and Dorian Peña will receive special citation for their unwavering support to the press corps.
Uichico, also the winner of the Coach of the Year honors in 2000, is to get his second Baby Dalupan Trophy on the strength of Ginebra’s All-Filipino title conquest. That was Uichico’s first tournament with the Kings following his transfer from the San Miguel Beer.
Vargas, on the other hand, was the hands-down choice as Executive of the Year for his excellent job in his tenure as chairman of the board in the season just past.
Fellow PBA executives noted Vargas worked quietly but effectively established programs and laid a solid foundation for long-term strategies that would guarantee the future growth of the league.
