Squires halt Cubs, force three-way tie
Letran outscored San Beda in the second quarter and went to fashion out a 106-92 victory yesterday to force a three-way tie at the helm in the 83rd NCAA juniors’ basketball tournament at The Arena in
Kevin Alas sizzled with 40 points, including six triples, to power the Squires to their second straight win in three outings that gave them a share of the lead with their victim and the San Sebastian Staglets.
SSC whipped La Salle-Greenhills, 105-83, to bounce back from a 74-75 setback to Letran.
“Our game plan worked, we limited their scorers and Kevin gave us a big lift early, he’s really a big-time scorer,” Letran coach Elmer Latonio said.
Nicolas Salva and Luis Revilla turned in 17 points apiece but San Beda had no answer to Alas, who converted 14 of his 21 shots en route to eclipsing the previous high of 37 points set by Jose Rizal’s BJ Cipriano.
Ryan Buenafe, playing his last season for SSC, scored 36 points for the Staglets.
