University of Santo Tomas celebrated its return to the Shakey’s V-League by upending three-time champion La Salle in four sets even as Lyceum seized the solo lead with a straight-set victory over Letran for its second win at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Tigresses, winners of the inaugural staging of the event in 2004 but who took a leave last conference to rebuild their team following the graduation of key players, fought back from an opening setback by sweeping the next three to complete a 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 victory.

Venus Bernal uncorked a 27-point performance for UST, which took an opening day bye, including 25 hits that did the Lady Archers in.

La Salle, which swept FEU last Thursday, dropped to 1-1.

Earlier, Lyceum came through with timely hits and scrambled for saves in the third set to complete a 25-19, 25-18, 26-24 victory over Letran.

The Lady Pirates outhit the Letran spikers in a duel of the Muralla-based squads, coming away with 39 attacks, including 13 from top hitter Sherrilyn Carrillo and nine from Beverly Boto as they wrested the early lead in the event sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

Far Eastern U bounced back from a straight-set loss to La Salle last week by edging Adamson in a thrilling five-setter, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 16-14, in the second game of the tournament backed by Mikasa, Accel and Jaemark’s Restaurant.

Rachelle Anne Daquis came through with a crucial block off Suzanne Roces to shatter the 14-all tie in the deciding set then Irish Morada unleashed a thundering kill that pierced through Adamson’s defense for the win.
