16 schools picked for Jr NBA program

The National Basketball Association yesterday launched its Jr. NBA program in the country with around 50 kids from 16 private and public schools tapped for the two-month activity culminating with a training camp next month.

Former Detroit Pistons and PBA best import Norman Black conducted a special one-day clinic for over 200 kids at the SM Mall of Asia in yesterday’s inaugurals of the Jr. NBA, which complements the local school’s sports and recreational program and instills it with the prestige and unique experiences of the NBA.

"With the reception here in Manila, there is no doubt this program will return to the Philippines year after year," said Black, Jr. NBA’s project director.

It actually started last April 2 where students aged 9-14 took part in a series of clinics, drills, scrimmages and discussions on sportsmanship, teamwork, positive attitude and respect.

The program serves as a talent search for gifted children who can excel not only on the basketball court, but also in their schools and communities as well.

"We are excited to team up with the program partners to bring Jr. NBA to the Philippines and help the development of youth basketball in the country," said Loron Orris, managing director of NBA Asia Limited. "Besides emphasizing fundamental skill development, the program will also provide a fun and rewarding basketball experience where the young players can create a bond with the game while learning what it takes to be successful away from the court."

Jr. NBA Philippines is comprised of three stages and will culminate with the Jr. NBA training camp on June 4-6. The best six campers will be named to the first-ever Jr. NBA Philippine All-Star Team and will receive a once-in-a-lifetime trip to watch an NBA game live in the 2007-08 season. The first stage – the Jr. NBA school clinics – concluded yesterday with the second – the Jr. NBA tournament slated May 16-18 where each school will form a team of 12 players. Members of the championship team will automatically be invited to join the third stage – the Jr. NBA training camp.

In the camp, set June 4-6, each participating school will nominate three students from their respective teams. Besides good basketball skills, the nominated students must be in good academic standing and must be active in their community. The three-day advanced session will be hosted by a Jr. NBA coach from the US with the best six campers to compose the Jr. NBA Philippine All-Star Team.

The 16 participating schools are PAREF Southridge School, Letran, Don Bosco (Mandaluyong), San Sebastian , Don Bosco (Makati), Rizal High , University of Perpetual Help System Dalta,  Parañaque National HS, De La Salle Zobel, Ateneo, UP Integrated School, San Beda College, Aquinas School,  La Salle Greenhills, University of Sto.
