Tough defense does it for Aces

Outgunned in a high-scoring game by Red Bull the last time out, Alaska Milk shifted its focus on defense and pulled through against Welcoat last night.

The Aces whipped the Dragons, 99-78, behind a solid defense to gain a share of second place with the Bulls and the Coca-Cola Tigers in the Talk n Text PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Even Willie Miller played below his average of 25.7 points a game – second best among locals – and scored only nine points but he did his part in smothering the Dragons en route to their third win against a lone defeat.

"We keyed our offense on our defense. We’ve realized that’s the way to do it since our players are all stoppers. We’re disappointed with our defensive effort the last time and we’re determined tonight," said Alaska coach Tim Cone.

Cone lauded import Rossel Ellis’ performance against the Dragons.

San Miguel Beer bungled three field-goal attempts and two charities in the last 20.3 seconds of play, allowing reigning champion Purefoods Tender Juicy to break into the win-column with a 79-77 decision in the second game.

Marquin Chandler scored 33 points in his return from injury, helping the Giants book their first win following three straight defeats.
