Centennial cops overall crown

- Joey Villar, Nelson Beltran -
Centennial, a Sydney 46 manned mostly by members of the RP sailing team, might have relinquished her President’s Cup Regatta (PRC) crown but captured the e-Standard Insurance Boracay Series overall championship at the close of the weeklong event in Boracay Saturday.

Judes Echauz, the president of the Philippine Sailing Association, and his crew ran away with the inaugural Boracay Series overall crown by topping the Manila-Boracay Race then placing second to Jelik in the President’s Cup Regatta.

Jelik, a Reichel/Pugh 75 of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club member Frank Pong, topped the IRC Racing Class of 15th PRC and received the perpetual cup from Manila Yacht Club Commodore Butch Rumillo and DOTC’s Cynthia Carreon during the awards rites Saturday night at Fairways and Bluewater.

Sandoway of Klaus Huisjes and China Rose of Rainer Blum also emerged overall winners in their respective classes in the series sponsored by e-Standard Insurance, Smart Infinity, American Express, Oakley, Suunto, Johnnie Walker, Fairways and Bluewater, San Miguel Super Dry, Sea Air, Clinique, Asia Pacific Boating, Fragrant Harbour, Asian Yachting, The Philippine STAR, Manifesto, Calibre Magazine and Crossover 105.1.

Sandoway, a BH 36, topped the IRC 1 Class, beating Happy Endings, Rags, Selma Star, Salina, Irresistible, Selma, Solviento, Ho Ho Ho and Challenge. Irresistible emerged overall winner earlier in the Manila-Boracay Race.

China Rose, meanwhile, beat Fast Exit and Sweet Pea in the PY Cruising Class.

Final placings in the IRC Racing Class at the close of the PRC were Jelik at No. 1 followed by Centennial, Quantum Racing, Hi-Fidelity, Ffreefire, Karakoa, Mandrake, Hummingbird and Jaywalker.

Jelik didn’t compete in the Manila-Boracay Race.
