La Salle bets capture silver in Asean chess

The Philippines, represented by La Salle Green Hills, finished second behind Singapore in the Asean International School chess tournament at the Asean Chess Academy in Singapore last week.

Bannered by Joel Pimentel, Antonito Mikey Ramos, Miguel Lahoz and Miguel Matugas, the RP squad held its own against the fancied teams in the 15-team field, scoring 16.5 points to bag the silver medal.

"Our efforts paid off. While everybody was busy with the Christmas rush, our boys were busy competing and trying to bring honors for the country," said Bro. Rolando Dizon, FSC, who headed the RP delegation.

Singapore topped the event with 19 points while India placed third with nine points.

Pimentel, the under-13 Asean champion, placed second in the Open under-15 (standard) while Ramos finished third in the Open rapid.

Other Filipino silver medal winners were Samantha Revita (under-7 girls) and Paulo Bersamina (Open 9, boys) while Grace Neri finished fifth in under-15 and Mira Mirano placed seventh in under 9. Kaye Ann Legaspi wound up 15th in under-13 girls.
