Agui closes in on Am Division title

BAGUIO CITY — Camp Aguinaldo carded a 91 at Camp John Hay Golf Club yesterday to virtually retain the Am Division championship after the third round of the seniors competition in the 57th Fil-Am Invitational.

With its previous rounds of 95 and 10l at the nearby Baguio Country Club, the Aguinaldo bets play their final 18 today with a 54-hole total of 290. Camp John Hay shot 91 to be in far second with 256.

Golden Oats Plus made 95 at the Country Club for its poorest showing in three days to endanger its Fil Division championship bid. Together with its earlier 124 and 123 in its own turf, the rookie bets were at 342.

Camp John Hay shot 108 to go with its earlier 123 and 109 at home to be at 340. The defending champion started the day 15 big points behind Golden Oats.

Golden Oats relied on Freddie Mendoza’s 28, Florene de los Santos 25, Eduardo Sison’s 22 and the 20 of either Bayani Fontanilla or Antonio Hernandez. John Hay’s scorers were Fred Puckett (31), Clyde Cabreros (30), Bob Patterson (24) and Nelson Eslao (23).

Wilson Sports, Pacsports, Generali Pilipinas, San Miguel Corporation, Asian Spirit, Ayala Land, Ottica Eyewear, University of Baguio, Turf Company, Texas Instruments, Eva Air, U-Bix, Club Car and Travel Club are this year’s sponsors.

Aguinaldo’s scorers were Dante Tejada, Clyde Fernandez and Nestor Garcia with 24 each and Leoncio Valderama’s 22 while those who counted for John Hay were Kwon Kim Ho 26, Bob Capuyan 25, Willy Enciso 22 and Herbert Hayes 18.

Belyn Holdings/Mizuno carded 97 on Danny Pizarro’s 26, the 25 of Conrad Chuidian, Ricky de la Paz’s 24 and the 22 of Roberto Sabularse to retain the Fil Division Flight A lead with 304.

Belyn Holdings/Mizuno team owner Benigno Gopez withdrew and rushed to Los Angeles upon learning that his 85-year-old mother Remedios died the previous night.

Second was Manila Southwoods with 96-281, followed by Baguio Country Club 90-272, Fairgolf Club of Sydney 84-270, Villa Cacho 83-261, Dugong Bughaw 67-220.

Club Intramuros made a 94 to remain on top in the Fil Division Flight B with 260. C-Lium Fibre shot an 82 to keep second place with 253. Third was T & T with 71 and 251. — With report from Artemio Dumlao
