PBA stars’ scariest movies

THE GAME OF MY LIFE - Bill Velasco -
Halloween brings out the fear in everybody, even most of the behemoths of the Philippine Basketball Association. For most of us, horror movies left us scared in our youth, and it takes an awful lot to get over the chills. Being big doesn’t make you an exception. We asked your favorite players what were the scary movies and supernatural characters they would never forget.

"It’s that demon, man, in The Exorcist, it’s a woman. She’s got this white face and these — I don’t even want to talk about it," says an emotional Ali Peek of the Coca-Cola Tigers. "I was watching the sequel, and that same demon was in that movie. And I didn’t realize they were also going to show that demon. I changed the channel. Something about that demon just freaks me out."

"The scariest character I’ve ever watched was probably Candyman," admits Dorian Peña of the San Miguel Beermen.

"For me, the scariest movie of all was Shake, Rattle and Roll," is the contribution of Alaska’s Willie Miller in the vernacular. "And the scariest character is the white lady, because you don’t know where she is, when she’ll show up, and then she’s suddenly beside you. So look behind you, there might be a white lady there."

"The scariest movie character for me would be Freddie Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, who would scare you in your dreams," remembers Jimmy Alapag of the Talk ‘n Text Phone Pals. "I would have nightmares when I was about six or seven years old. I saw that movie when I was a kid, and he was really scary. But he’s not there anymore."

"The one who comes out of the TV, Sadako," blurts Jun-jun Cabatu of the Welcoat Dragons. "I always think about that even when I’m at home."

"For me, the scariest movie of all time was Thriller. I don’t even know if it was a full movie," an amused Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia Realty remembers. "I think since then, I’ve been so scared of scary movies. I’d even be checking under the bed to see if there were anybody there."

"I think I have a top two: The Exorcist. I mean I could still watch that now and still be scared,"Peek adds sheepishly. "Seriously, I’d probably go to bed with the lights on because it would freak me out so much. And the second one would probably be Night of the Living Dead. Something about zombies freaks me out also."

"For me, the movie that was really scary was Feng Shui," claims Air21’s Ronald Tubid.

"The scariest movie of all time for me is Texas Chainsaw Massacre," remembers Alex Cabagnot of Sta. Lucia Realty. "I saw the original when I was a kid, and I still get scared when I see it."

"Manananggal, that’s really scary," says Purefoods’ Marc Pingris. "And ghosts, and white ladies."

"The scariest movie I ever saw was Texas Chainsaw Massacre," seconds Asi Taulava of Talk ‘N Text. "I was a little kid. Just the idea of somebody cuttin’ somebody up with a chainsaw gave me a chill out of it. It was so disgusting and scary. I’ve always had an idea that if I was by myself, he would come into my room and cut me up with his chainsaw, and nobody would ever know where I went."

"I would get scared with how Emily Rose looked (The Exorcism of Emily Rose), especially when she got possessed," exclaims Sta. Lucia Realty’s Nelbert Omolon. "I’ve always been scared of demons, bad spirits and things that possess people, because that happens in real life."

"When I was a kid, I was always scared there was something under my bed, so I wouldn’t let my feet hang," Kelly Williams adds. "Now, I’m still a little scared, but it’s okay."

"Sometimes, I’d pull the sheets over my head after watching a ghost movie," Peek continues. "You could argue that they’re real. And even if I’m this big, they still freak me out."

"I’d just prayed that no ghosts or bogeyman or whatever would come into my room or haunt me or drive me nuts," recalls Taulava.

"Michael Jackson is probably the scariest character of all time," Williams concludes.

Come to think of it, Michael Jackson scares me, too, Kelly.
