La Salle rules SBP; San Beda tops Passerelle

La Salle Greenhills banked on Thomas Torres’ hot hand to subdue Ateneo in overtime, 50-43, and capture the SBP title in the 21st season of the Milo BEST Center SBP/Passerelle basketball tournament Sunday at the Blue Eagle gym in Quezon City.

Torres finished with 28 points, including six in overtime after Blue Eaglet Michael Javelosa’s buzzer-beating 18-footer tied the count at 39.

San Beda College bucked a sluggish first quarter to beat De La Salle Zobel, 54-45, and take the Passerelle crown.

Arthur Dela Cruz made key defensive plays in the payoff period to ensure the Bedans’ triumph.

Dela Cruz and Torres were named most valuable players of the Passerelle and SBP divisions, respectively.

San Beda routed Xavier, 62-28, and Ateneo whipped also Xavier, 80-56, to finish third in the SBP and Passerelle groups, respectively.

Lourdes School Mandaluyong got the sportsmanship award in SBP while DLSZ took the same award in Passerelle.

SBP and Passerelle alumni LA Tenorio and Magnum Membrere presented the awards, assisted by Milo BEST president Nic Jorge, SBP head Larry Marasigan and Nestle’s Robbie Afzelius.
