Blazers turn back Bombers; MIT’s Gonzales suspended

- Joey Villar -
David Urra III scored with 3.9 seconds to go as St. Benilde edged Jose Rizal, 69-68, in the penultimate playing date of the NCAA men’s basketball yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Urra fired the clincher in the dying seconds and finished with 12 points as the Blazers claimed its third win against 11 losses.

In the other game, Perpetual Help walloped San Sebastian, 85-69, to clinch fifth place with a 5-9 card.

The Stags and the Bombers closed out with identical 4-10 (win-loss) slates.

The league heavies cap the elimination round Wednesday when the Mapua Cardinals battle the Philippine Christian Dolphins at 2 p.m. while the league-leading San Beda Red Lions go up against the Letran Knights at 4 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.

Meanwhile, the NCAA Management Committee yesterday suspended Mapua forward Jofferson Gonzales while reprimanding teammate Kelvin dela Peña for their misconduct in the Cardinals’ 56-73 loss to the San Beda Red Lions Wednesday.
