Taiwanese wallop RP belles

Chun Shan of Chinese-Taipei sent the Accel Philippine team back to school as it scored a roaring 25-18, 25-13, 25-15 triumph yesterday in the second day of the 2006 Hitachi Asian Women’s Club volleyball championship at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Skippers Mei Ching Chen, Ching I Lin and Ko Jou Wu merged for 27 points—23 of those were on attacks—while the Philippines got only a merged 17 kills from Mary Jean Balce, Michelle Carolino, Cherry Macatangay, Marietta Carolino and Michelle Laborte.

"As what I said earlier, the girls compete here to gain experience and it doesn’t matter if the result is good or bad. The best thing was we learned something from it," said RP mentor Dante Reyes, whose next assignment is Japan’s Hisamitsu Seiyaku Springs.

After winning over a sloppy Indonesian team the other night, 26-24, 25-13, 26-24, Filipinas failed to duplicate the same feat as the Taiwanese belles were leading as many as 10 in the three sets.

Chinese-Taipei, backed by Chun Shan club, kept its dominating form all-throughout in the last two sets to finish the game in just an hour and two minutes to clinch second win in the event sponsored by Hitachi Products, Shakey’s Pizza, Hope, PCSO and Accel.

The Taiwanese belles earned their first win over Kazakhstan the other day, 25-16, 18-25, 25-21, 25-14, in the opening of the tourney organized by PVF secretary-general Pedro Mendoza.

"It seems Philippines is on a rebuilding process, so we took that as our advantage," said Taiwanese mentor Lin Kuang Hung, whose half of players are members of the national team and some are varsitarians in different schools.

Reigning champion Tianjin Bridgestone China also scored a second straight win with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-13 walloping of Garuda Indonesia in the second game.

All-around star Zhang Ziqian delivered 13 crisp kills and had six blocks and one service winner to lead the Chinese to their easy demolition of the Indons.

In the third day of the event today organized by Philippine Volleyball Federation, Sangsom Thailand faces Indonesian Garuda team in first game at 2pm, while Accel Philippines battles the tough Hisamitsu Seiyaku Springs Japan in second game at 4 p.m.
