Granny, Magnolia back in groove

- Joey Villar -
Granny Goose leaned on Kelvin dela Peña’s endgame heroics as it trounced Hapee Toothpaste-PCU, 76-71, yesterday to snap a two-game slump in the PBL Unity Cup at the Far Eastern U Gym.

Dela Peña fired 17 points including seven in the fourth quarter that sealed the Snack Masters’ second win against the same number of losses.

It was a fitting gift to Granny Goose coach Robert Sison, who turned 39 yesterday.

Dela Peña’s triple early in the final period gave Granny Goose a 63-50 lead but Hapee closed the gap at 74-71 on a run sparked by Gabby Espinas.

Granny Goose shut down Hapee-PCU the rest of the way, dealing the Lamoiyan-owned franchise a third setback against a win.

Heroes Cup champion Magnolia Ice Cream drubbed Harbour Centre, 63-57, also for its second win in four games later in the day.

Fil-Am Kelly Williams exploded for 11 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and added 16 rebounds to lead the Spinners past the struggling Harbour Centre side.

The high-leaping Williams strung up five straight points in a 7-0 blitz the Spinners unleashed to break the back of the Port Masters at endgame.

Harbour Centre remained winless in four matches.
