Illustre fuels Dapitan tankers surge; JAS gymnasts shine

Dapitan continued to dominate as it hauled 12 more gold medals while Jose Abad Santos bagged nine golds in gymnastics yesterday in the Manila Youth Games at the Rizal Sports Complex.

Wonder girl Ingrid Illustre led the White Whales’ attack in the second day of action among the 17-and-under in- and out-of-school youth athletes as she won four more gold medals to hike her total haul to eight.

Illustre topped the 10-and-under 100-meter freestyle, 50m back stroke, 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle as Dapitan collected 22 gold medals in swimming competitions of this event bankrolled by Converse and backed by Super Ferry, PSC, Pagcor, San Miguel Corp., Montaña Pawnshop, Globe, Milo, Air21, IntraSports and Concept Movers.

The other gold medal winners of the team were Jodie de Leon (11-12 100m free, 50m free and 100m back), Aiza Reyes (11-12 100m fly), Ahli Frigillana (15-18 100m fly), Shawn Arquiza (15-18 100m fly), and its 9-and-over 200m freestyle relay team of Joana Mungcal, Kimberly Pellosis, Mariane Walthorn and Geraldine Tianzon.

Mage Wagan spearheaded Jose Abad Santos’ gold medal rush at the mat as she won four, thanks to her victories in the rope, hoop, ball and ribbon events of rhythmic gymnastics.

Teammate Bleau Berry Gulfan accounted for the other five with victories in rope, hoop, ball, ribbon and individual all around 16-and-above section, also of rhythmic gymnastics. Jose Abad Santos now has 18 gold medals heading into the third day action of this week-long event.

In high school softball, Villegas battered Carlos P. Garcia High with 18 runs on its way to a 23-0 rout even as Ramon Magsaysay High (España) thumped Carlos P. Garcia, 23-7.

In baseball action, Regidor (Sta. Cruz) stunned defending champion Smokey Mountain, 7-3. It was Regidor’s first triumph while Smokey Mountain fell to its first defeat following a 11-4 win over G.V. Lim in Day 1.

Nolasco High, for its part, trounced District 5, 17-1 for its first win in high school baseball.
