Unlike in the second round where she had to work out a sweat to pull off a 6-2, 7-6 (0) win over Chang Kai-Chen of China for nearly two hours, the 16-year-old Dy had little trouble in hurdling her Thai foe in just a little over an hour.
"I played better today (yesterday) because I was more relaxed," said Dy, who is coming off a semifinal and a pair of quarterfinal finishes in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
Big hitting third pick Maya Gaverova of Russia also made it through with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of No. 15 Ilana Agranovich of Israel to set up an interesting duel with the Fil-Am double gold medalist in last year’s 23rd Southeast Asian Games.
Dy knows Gaverova is no easy target.
"We haven’t met but I’ve seen her (Gaverova) play," said Dy. "She has powerful strokes and I have to be ready for that, but I can beat her with my quickness."
Top seed Sacha Jones of New Zealand continued to dominate the field, trouncing No. 13 Elena Chernyakova of Russia, who ousted Keren Shlomo, 6-1, 6-3, in Wednesday’s second round, in a 6-3, 7-5 triumph.
Jones faces seventh seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand, a 6-0, 6-4 winner over No. 10 Yang Zijun of Hong Kong, China.
Dy looks forward to meeting Jones again.
"She’s part of my motivation because she defeated me twice this month, I want to get back at her if I get the chance," said Dy of the New Zealander.
Jones bested Dy, 6-2, 6-3, the first time the two met on her way to winning the tournament in Genting, Malaysia and repeated a week after, 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals in Bangkok.
Second seed Khrystyna Antoniychuk of Ukraine, No. 11 Veronica Li of the United States, eighth pick Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland and unheralded Chloe Jones of the US.
Antoniyuchuk walloped No. 16 Monika Sirilova of Slovakia, 6-1, 6-2: Li slammed Stephanie Vogt of Liechtenstein, 6-3, 6-1; Voegele downed No. 12 Sandhya
Nagaraj of India, 6-3, 6-4; and Jones shocked No. 14 Yurina Koshino of Japan, 6-1, 6-0.
In men’s play, Top seed Sanam Singh of India also advanced to the next round with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over No. 15 Rasmus Moller of Denmark.
No. 3 Lee Hsin-Han of Chinese Taipei, No. 4 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of India and Danil Arsenov of Russia joined Singh in the quarters before games were stopped because of rains. The rest of the games were played out late in the afternoon.
