Orcollo earns third US billiards plum

-
RENO, Nevada – The Philippines’ new billiard sensation Dennis Orcollo hoisted his third championship trophy as he won the 2006 US Bar Box 8-ball Championship at Sands Regency Hotel and Casino here.

After ruling the tough International Pool Tour (IPT) Qualification Tournament that netted him the IPT Tour card needed to compete in the $8-million 2006 IPT Tour and the World Bar Tour (9-Ball) Open, Orcollo pounded his way to victory in the US Bar Box meet beating some of the world’s best money game players.

The 27-year-old Orcollo completed his run through the field of 225 players that included RP bets Antonio Lining, Ramil Gallego and former US Open champion Gabe Owen with a masterful 5-1 win against Edwin Montal.

En route to the finals, Orcollo reigned in Bracket A where he had notable wins against Nick Hewko, Steve McAninch, Danny Medina and TJ Davis.

He beat Mark Eberle in the semifinals before challenging Montal in the finals.

Montal, the 9-ball finalist against eventual winner Mike Davis, was the top qualifier in Bracket B after defeating Derek Porgiski, Jesse Bowman, Frankie Hernandez and TR Olsen.

"Three victories in four tournaments in the United States proved that Dennis (Orcollo) already rose to stardom," said Orcollo’s longtime benefactor Perry Mariano. Orcollo placed fourth in the World Bar Tour 8-Ball Championship.

"Once again he wowed the crowd during the IPT qualifying and World Bar Tour in California. Now he already drew a big crowd in Nevada," added Mariano.

"I wish to thank those who have supported me for this US stint," said Orcollo who pocketed the $10,000 top purse.
