RP Special Olympics team bags 3 golds

The Philippines’ Special Olympics team came through with solid performances on the Pasir Ris lanes and in the National University of Singapore bocce field, bagging three golds and eight silvers in the sixth Singapore National Invitational Olympic Games in Singapore recently.

Jonathan Zulueta anchored the special athletes’ tenpin bowling squad’s romp by winning the men’s singles while powering the four-man mixed team of Alfred Abueg, Mark Inductivo and Roxanne Ng to the gold. Anton Silos and Stephanie Babst, on the other hand, ruled the mixed doubles event.

Team Philippines also had four bronze medals and two four fourth place finishes.

The silver medalists were Stephanie Babst, Larry Cruz, Mark Inductivo, Roxanne Ng, Anton Silos in various divisions of their bowling singles events; Cruz and Robin Clarino in doubles event. Clarino won a bronze medal in bowling singles. Alfred Abueg and Paul Vincent Viado, lone athlete from the SO Cebu Chapter, placed fourth place in their respective singles events.

Medalists in bocce, a relatively new sports discipline in the Special Olympics were Neil Sebastian and Ana Se, silver medalists in their respective singles event; Margaret Babst, bronze in singles; and Ken Yu/Sebastian and Se/Babst in the doubles.

The participation of the Team Philippines was supported by Reebok as official outfitter, Red Corner Fitness & Boxing Club at the Intercontinental Hotel, Bong Coo’s The Bowler, Powerbowl at the Rockwell, Creative Response, Penshoppe, & Burlington and Globe Telecom.

Officials of the delegation were Manny Inductivo, SOP vice president, assisted by Cristy Gacuma and lawyer Gani Zulueta, bowling coaches, and Suzette Babst as bocce coach.<
