Lagman, Cordero Head-Penn champs

Jacob Lagman and Kyle Cordero lived up to their top billing when they ruled their respective divisions yesterday in the ninth Head-Penn Match Play tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Lagman smashed second pick Calvin Canlas, 6-0, 6-1, to reign supreme in the unisex 10-and-under while Cordero whipped second-ranked Alberto Villamor, 6-1, 6-2, for the 12-and-under crown.

Of the two, Lagman was the more dominant after conceding only four points – three in the semifinals against Pocholo Macalino and one in the finals – out of the 64 games he played in the week-long event serving as the final stop of the nine-leg national age-group circuit.

Second seed Aiko Sy, for his part, stunned top pick Gerard Ngo, 6-2, 7-5, to top the 14-and-under section while Regina Santiago kept order in the girls’ 12-and-under with a 6-1, 6-3 trouncing of JV Custodio to rule her bracket.

On her way to the finals, Santiago ran into Clarice Patrimonio, one of three tennis-playing children of former PBA star entered in this tournament, pulling off a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Christine Patrimonio, who eked out a draining 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 triumph over Sarah Jane Lim in Saturday’s semifinals, suffered the same fate as she was shell-shocked by No. 2 Zhane Quitara, 1-6, 3-6, in the 14-and-under finals.
