Jose Abad sweeps 10 gymnastic golds

- Joey Villar -
Overshadowed on opening day by Tondo High School, Jose Abad High unleashed a 10-gold medal splurge in rhythmic gymnastics yesterday to seize the overall lead in Day 3 of the fourth Manila Youth Games at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Mage Wagan spearheaded the charge by winning half of Jose Abad’s 10 golds with victories in the rope, hoop, ball, ribbon and individual all-around events of the 13-15 years old category with Joan Caluscusin copping four golds in the rope, hoop, ball and individual all-around in girls’ side.

Jose Abad’s Day 3 juggernaut increased its total haul to 16 gold, five silver and five bronze medals in this event organized by Manila Sports Council (Masco) head Ali Atienza, son of Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.

Brgy. Obrero and Arsenio Herrera School trailed the Binondo-based gymnasts at second and third places with tallies of 12-4-7 and 8-12-10, respectively.

Tondo High School, located in the Don Bosco area, remained stagnant after an eight-gold onslaught in Day 1 action.

Brgy Obrero drew major production from Masami Shinoda, who won three gold medals in the hoop, ball and individual all-around events, missing only on a possible fourth medal by finishing second behind Ray Queen Herrera of Arsenio Herrera School in the rope event.

In football, Dr. Albert Elementary School, which is one of the touted teams to rule the track and field and swimming competitions set late this week, took home gold in the 10-and-under football with Lakandula Elementary School and Sta. Ana Elementary School finishing with a silver and a bronze, respectively.
