Z Gorres KOs US-based Pinoy

- Abac Cordero -
LAS VEGAS — There must be something special in that blue corner of the MGM’s Garden Arena on Saturday night that all seven fighters who fought out of that corner came out the winner.

Setting the tone for the day’s blue-corner fighters was Filipino super-flyweight Z Gorres who pounded out a first-round knockout of US-based Filipino Glenn Donaire.

Then came heavyweight Albert Sosnowski of Warsaw, Poland, who stopped American Travis Fulton in the second round of a scheduled six-rounder.

The first decision of the day was awarded to Mike Alvarado who scored a unanimous victory over Hilario Lopez in their super-lightweight clash. Again, Alvarado fought out of the blue corner.

Another unanimous decision favoring the blue corner was that of Martin Castillo over the tested Eric Morel of Puerto Rico.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., drawing inspiration from his legendary father who was at ringside, continued the blue-corner rampage with another knockout win — this one against Ryan Maraldo of Indianapolis.

Keeping the streak going was the small but terrible Jorge Arce who came back from the jaws of defeat before stopping Hussein Hussein in the 10th of a scheduled 12-rounder.

Then came Erik Morales beating Manny Pacquiao in a fight that lasted the distance.

Morales, like the others, fought out of the blue corner. And, like the others, came out the winner.
