UM keeps unbeaten card intact

University of Manila overcame a sluggish start to whip Centro Escolar University, 92-53, and preserve its clean slate in the fourth NAASCU basketball tournament at the CEU gym yesterday.

The Hawks, who bled for only four points in the opening quarter and 27 in the first half, outscored the Scorpions, 22-13, in the fourth quarter as they stayed unscathed in 10 starts this season.

The three-time national inter-collegiate champions remain unbeaten since the league’s inception in 2001.

Jovit Gomez scored a game-high 20 points with Ryan Regalado adding 12 for Atty. Ernesto delos Santos’ multi-titled squad. Glen Gatdula paced the Scorpions with 17.

In the other games, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay outlasted New Era University, 94-85, and University of Makati subdued Holy Angel University, 67-64.

Last Monday, the Hawklets soared higher than Holy Angel University’s Junior Flyers, scoring a 92-53 lopsided win at the New Era University gym.

Onofre Napiza, Mark Cantollas and Christian Guimpatan starred for the UM Juniors, all firing no less than 16 points.

Ralph Bautista, Jasper Chua and Jay Torres led the Junior Flyers with 10 points apiece.

The Hawklets also got off to a slow start but picked up their game in the second half to carve out the rout.
