PBA okays limit on Fil-foreign players

-
The PBA board of governors has approved a measure designed to limit the entry of Fil-foreign cagers in the league.

In a meeting that lasted over six hours Monday, the league board gave its thumbs up on the proposal of commissioner Noli Eala requiring Fil-foreign cagers to first go through a residency rule before they are allowed to join the annual draft. Under the rule, the players need to play at least 25 games in the PBL, UAAP, NCAA, NBC or URBL to be eligible for the draft.

Starting next year, draft day will be the third Sunday after the end of every season.

The board likewise approved the proposal limiting to five the number of Fil-foreign cagers allowed to play per team by the 2006-2007 season.

At the same time, the board decided to lift restrictions on height ceiling for imports playing in the league starting the 2004-2005 campaign. This opens the door for participation of seven-footers in the league.

Meanwhile, Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio strengthened his staff by acquiring the services of FEU mentor Koy Banal.

"I’d been searching for another assistant for a long time. Since he’s proven himself to be a winner, I got him to strengthen my staff," said Gregorio. "This is a welcome development. Maganda ang resume niya and I hope to have a good working relationship with him."

Gregorio intended to make Banal his defense coach, allowing Ronnie Magsanoc to concentrate on defense and individual skills training of the team’s backcourt players.

"I’m impressed with his (Banal’s) defense (with the FEU and Viva Mineral Water squads)," said Gregorio.
