Figueroa, Matan on target in nat’l archery

Athens-bound Jasmin Figueroa and Florante Matan lived up to expectations Wednesday by taking the men’s and women’s overall lead in the ongoing national target archery championships at the UP-PSC range in Diliman, Quezon City.

Figueroa collected 620 points to lead Rachelle Anne Cabral (615) and Geneveve Ty (512), while Matan carded 583 points to pull away from Christian Cubilla (569) and Mark Javier (569) after the first two qualifying round events in recurve.

Figueroa tallied 316 and 304 in the 70- and 60-meter distances, respectively, while Matan shot 276 and 307 in the 90 and 70 meters, respectively.

Cabral created a stir by finishing seven points ahead of Figueroa in the 60-meter distance.

Ma. Amaya Paz and Earl Yap showed the way in the men’s and women’s compound divisions.

Paz carded 644 (318 in 70 meters and 326 in 60) to pace Janina Bianca Ortiz (638) and Marcille Grapa (567) while Yap tallied 630 (303 in 90 and 327 in 70) to run away from Carlos Carag (608) and Nestor de Castro (600).

Other frontrunners in the tourney organized by the National Archery Association of the Philippines headed by Dr. Lenora Fe Brawner and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission follow:
