Ramon Fernandez has been named commissioner of the newly-formed United Regional Basketball League. The four-time PBA MVP and former MBA commissioner agreed to assume the post after being oriented with URBLs provincial-based and grassroots development concept.
Fernandez, acknowledged as one of the countrys best players ever, believes that the URBL will be able to develop young players from the countryside as well as provide an avenue to players on the comeback trail.
"The URBL is not the MBA! But I believe the regional concept being relived will help grassroots development and re-generate basketball interest throughout the country," said Fernandez.
As a stock corporation, each URBL franchise will gain a seat on the Board of Governors, allowing team owners direct participation in league affairs. On top of the board seat, each owner will receive stock certificates to guarantee their participation within the corporation, thus assuring that all league revenues will be shared equally among the pioneering members.
