Benilde keeps 4 titles in WNCAA

-
College of Saint Benilde duplicated its feat last year, winning four of five WNCAA events over the weekend at the continuation of the 34th season of the country’s first and only tri-level league for women at the St. Benedict College in Alabang.

The Lady Blazers retained its crown in tennis, swimming, chess and table tennis while University of the Assumption-Pampanga dethroned St. Scholastica’s College in badminton.

In juniors play, Angelicum College leaned on Czarina Mae Arevalo, one of the country’s top netter, to annex the tennis title over 33rd season winner Miriam College.

Arevalo was later named Most Valuable Player (MVP).

A new winner also emerged in juniors table tennis with Rizal Technological University putting one over last year’s champion St. Stephen High School.

St. Scho retained the swimming diadem while Assumption College was tops in badminton.

In the midget division, St. Stephen won in swimming but the MVP award went to Carmina Quilala of second placer St. Scho.

The 34th WNCAA-adidas is sponsored by Rustan’s Essenses, Manila Bulletin, PhilippineSTAR, RPN 9, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Gold’s Gym and in part by Cadbury, Secret, Island Cove resorts, Goldilock’s, Caf? Lupe, Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdog and Centrum.

Winning the seniors MVP plums were CSB’s Stephanie Kimura (tennis), Diane Valdez (table tennis), Tomoe Tatsumi (swimming) and Kathryn Ann Cruz (chess).

UA-P’s Donna Magat was badminton MVP.

Gold medallists in seniors chess are CSB’s Cruz (Board 1), Christine Castellano (Board 2) and Enerose Magno (Board 3); and RTU’s Maja Flores and UA-P’s Hazmin Tayag (Board 4).

In the juniors category, named MVPs were RTU’s Arleen Borja (table tennis), St. Scho’s Luica Dacanay (swimming) and Assumption’s Racquel Guerrero (badminton).

On January 30 and 31, the athletics event will be played at the Rizal Memorial track and field oval.
