Top seed Magaway faces fancied Taiwanese in quarterfinals

Top seed Lawrence Magaway outclassed Korean Choi Woo-Whuk, 6-1, 6-1, yesterday to reach the boys’ singles quarterfinals of the Enervon Tablet-Futures Foundation International Juniors Tennis Championships at the Ynares Socio-Cultural Sports Center in Pasig City.

Magaway will next face seventh seed Taiwanese Lin Wei-Ting, a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Filipino Christopher Murfet.

Third seed Korean Lee Seong-Woo whipped American William Murrell, 6-0, 6-2, to advance against No. 8 Filipino Irwin de Guzman, who survived compatriot Nestor Celestino Jr., 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5, while No. 4 Korean Lim Hyung-Joon downed Filipino Arithmetico Lim, 6-2, 6-1, to advance against Filipino Miguel Lorenzo Narvaez, who scored a 6-1, 6-4 victory over compatriot Nico Riego De Dios.

Sixth seed Japanese Ryoken Matsui defeated Korean Tak Doo-Han, 6-0, 6-2, and local Michael Adrian Basco downed compatriot Ralph Kevin Barte, 6-1, 6-0, to also earn quarterfinal slots.

Earlier, top-ranked Filipino Czarina Mae Arevalo outplayed compatriot Ivy Kristhel de Castro, 7-5, 6-3, and fifth seed Indian Gayatri Krishna clobbered local Jin Querubin, 6-1, 6-0, to forge a quarterfinal showdown in this event sponsored by Philam Life Foundation, The Phinma Group, adidas Philippines, Prince rackets, Toby’s Sports, Viva Mineral Water, Nassau balls, Coke Light, Powerade and The Philippine Star.

Second seed Taiwanese Hwang I-Hsuan blasted local Melissa Orteza, 6-0, 6-0, to advance against American Denise Dy, a 6-2, 7-5 winner over local Noelle Conchita Zoleta; Taiwanese Tai Yu-Lin demolished local Anna Denis Culaba, 6-1, 6-1, to advance against Korean Byeon Hye-Jin, who defeated local Catherine Flores, 6-2, 7-5, and local Nikki Manalo beat compatriot Trudy Amoranto, 6-0, 6-3, to advance against Korean Kim Hee-Ju, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Australian Natalie Solevski.

In the girls doubles division, Trudy Amoranto and Nikki Manalo downed Julie Em Botor and Kristel Ann Louise Samala, 6-3, 7-6 (5), to set up a quarterfinal meeting with third seeds Denise Dy and Gayatri Krishnan.

Local pair Ivy de Castro and Noelle Conchita Zoleta trounced Filipino Anna Denise Culaba and Singaporean Cassandra Ng, 6-1, 6-3, to advance against fourth seeds Bernardine Aurell Sepulveda and Michelle Panis while Ma. Angelica Ngo and Michelle Pang conquered local Jin Querubin and Korean Nam Yoo-Ha, 6-2, 6-3, to advance against second seeds Alyssa Anne Labay and Australian Natalie Solevski.
