Schrempf, former NBA star, due for Adidas bash

-
Better known for his television advertisement moniker "The Triple Threat," three-time National Basketball Association All-Star and two-time Sixth Man of the Year Detlef Schrempf arrives in Manila today for the adidas-Understand The Game program to be held in three separate venues from Sept. 26-Oct. 3.

The adidas-Understand The Game includes basketball clinics in Olongapo and Batangas and a coaching clinic and big man’s camp at the adidas-Sports Kamp in Fort Bonifacio.

"The adidas Understand the Game campaign is a creative and unique opportunity for me to communicate American culture and utilize basketball to make new friends in the Philippines. In today’s world, there exists more than ever an incredible desire around the globe to learn about basketball and American culture. The game of basketball has quickly elevated itself to the status of the fastest growing team sport and it is one of the largest purveyors of American urban culture," said Schrempf.

The 6’10" German-native and US citizen who played for the Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, Seattle Supersonics, and the Portland Trail Blazers in his colorful NBA career, heads directly to Olongapo City for the first module of the training camp from the 26th to the 28th of September.

Schrempf, who had a starching height advantage as a small forward, was drafted eight overall by the Mavericks in the 1985 NBA Draft. He was then traded to the Pacers midway through his fourth season later in 1989 along with a second-round draft choice for Herb Williams.

He joined the Supersonics in 1993 and played a vital role in bringing Seattle the Western Conference Championship three seasons later. His career was highlighted by his role in their campaign to the Finals with teammates and NBA All Stars Gary Payton and Sean Kemp against Michael Jordan and eventual champions the Chicago Bulls in 1996. Schrempf was traded to Seattle for Derrick McKey and Gerald Padio in 1993.

The adidas understand the game program is sponsored by Shell, Globe-Gentext, Snickers chocolate bar, Isuzu, Powerade Viva Mineral Water, adidas body fragrance, Milo and is heavily supported by the US State Department, USA Basketball Academy, NBA, NBA Players Association and NBA Retired Players Association and EVA Air.
