Suarez, Canare lead World Cup qualifier

National bowlers C.J. Suarez and Jojo Canare produced big games at EDSA Lanes last Sunday and Monday to tow 54 others into the second round of the Bowling World Cup national finals.

Suarez waxed hot from the start, firing games of 268, 257, 255, a couple of 249s, 246, 237 and 233, to post a 12-game series of 2837 and a whopping 245-pin lead over fellow national player R.J. Bautista in the men’s competition.

Canare came through with games of 276, 249, 225 and 222 to chalk up a 10-game series of 2148 and pace little-known Cecille Cuesta by 193 pins in the ladies’ division.

Suarez and Canare, bidding to repeat as the country’s representatives to the prestigious international finals slated this year in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, were to see action anew yesterday together with the remaining contenders out of an original field of 164–27 men and 27 ladies–in the second round at SM Megamall.

With their scores carried over, Suarez and company roll 12 more games, while Canare and her buddies play 10 games to determine the top eight who will remain in contention in each division.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals–all best-of-three, head-to-head matches–will be held on Friday at Bowling Inn. The men’s and ladies’ champions will carry the RP colors in the 39th World Cup set Sept. 7 to Oct. 4 at Planet Sipango in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
