Dowling stars as UP belles stop DLSU five

Maria Camille Dowling scored 19 points and Jaclyn Marie Cruz made 15 as University of the Philippines (UP) beat defending women’s basketball champion De La Salle, 62-54, Sunday in the 66th University Athletic Association of the Philippines at the Adamson U gymnasium.

The five-foot-seven Dowling also hauled down 16 rebounds and dished out one assist for the Lady Maroons, who continued to share the lead with the Adamson Lady Falcons with a 3-0 win-loss record.

The Lady Archers, who were led by the 14 points of Aimee Jane Manosca and 13 of Regina Victoria Velarde, took their first loss in three matches.

Adamson remained unscathed, beating University of Santo Tomas (UST), with Dorothy Torres scoring 26 markers and Marites Gadian adding 20 in a 75-58 rout of the Lady Tigers, who are now 1-3 overall.

Ateneo evened its record to 2-2 after beating Far Eastern—now also 1-3, 60-56, in the other women’s match.

The Lady Eagles have voluntarily forfeited their first win over the Lady Maroons after head coach John Flores unintentionally fielded two foreign players at the same time on the playing court.

Having noted the infraction after the match, the Ateneo athletics and women’s team coaching staff immediately sought to forfeit the victory, a close 68-66 decision.
