Korean rocks Open with perfect game

Korean Yoon Dal Young scored a perfect game to steal the limelight in the penultimate day of the 32nd Boysen-PBC International Open Bowling Championships eliminations.

Using a 15 lbs. Columbia icon EQ ball, the 31-year old Young netted the 300 mark in lanes 29 and 30 of the Green Valley Center in Pasig Tuesday night, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat in the two-week long meet sponsored by Boysen, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Kegel Asia and AVIVA.

In notching the 13th perfect game of his nine-year playing center, the Korean right-hander was rewarded with a P100,000 prize purse courtesy of AVIVA.

It was actually a night when foreign bets showed their might in the Asian ranking tournament also backed by PRIMA, AMSTAR, Astor, BQS Management, Tone Guide, Silver Wings, Mercury Int’l Security Printing, Paper Handling Systems, Confident Feminine Napkins and H.S. Pow Construction.

Hong Kong sensation Wu Siu Hong came up with a 1022 effort to become the new men’s singles class 0 leader, with Singapore’s Lenny Lim in second with 983 and erstwhile leader Paulo Valdez relegated to third with his 981.

Riding the crest of his perfect game, Young moved up in the men’s all events leaderboard, placing second (1818) behind Malaysian Mohd Nadri (1872) and just a notch ahead of third-running Hong (1801).

The trio of national team coach Purvis Granger, Chester King and Youth Masters champion Frederick Ong provided one of the few bright spots for the Filipinos’ campaign here after they wrested the lead in the men’s team event.

Granger and Co. had a 1439 total to easily put away the previous leading score of 1312 made by the team of Edgar Barroga, Cyrus Cheung and Hong, which slipped to third place.

Chinese-Taipei, which arrived just three days ago, easily made its mark by rolling 1370 to place second behind the Filipinos in the same event.

Champions in the singles, doubles, team and all events will finally be known as the eliminations came to a close last night. The Open masters for men and women will then be played today and tomorrow before the meet goes fever pitch with the holding of the Asian Bowling Tour’s third leg over the weekend at the Pearl Plaza Center in Parañaque.
