La Salle to go all-out to claim Valdes Cup
May 5, 2003 | 12:00am
La Salle will be relying on its top guns as well as everyone on its golf roster when the 16th La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic fires off on May 6-8 at the Manila Golf Club and Canlubang Golf and Country Club.
Blaming their 1995 and 1998 defeats from their archrival on poor attendance, the Archers will go on an all-out campaign to keep the prestigious Ambassador Carlos Valdes Cup for good.
The school that wins three consecutive years takes home the perpetual Valdes Cup. La Salle had the chance to do it after winning the 1993 and 1994 editions and 1996 and 1997 series but was stopped by Ateneo on both occasions.
La Salles strength comes mostly from the lady Archers, 29 and below, and the 60 & above group, while the 30-39 age bracket is usually tightly fought by both schools.
The boys from La Salle Green Hills, who recently bagged the High School Division championship of the recently held Samsung Interscholastics at the Villamor Golf Club, will surely boost the chances of Archers in taking home the Valdes Cup.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman Eric Buhain, a La Salle Zobel and Philadephia alumnus, will lead invited guests and hit the ceremonial ball during the opening of the event.
