April 11, 2003 | 12:00am
The 2003 PBA Golf Classic, a five-leg series pitting the PBA Board of Governors and the Commissioners Office versus the sports media in a golfing duel for the perpetual Leo Prieto trophy, kicks off its opening leg at the fabled Wack Wack Golf Club on April 22.
PBA commissioner Noli Eala and former Board chairmen Wilfred Steven Uytengsu and Butch Alejo spearhead the PBA team against the sports media squad which will be bannered by sports editors Lito Tacujan of the Philippine Star, Ding Marcelo of Manila Bulletin, Rey Bancod of Tempo, Edwin Gabutina of Today and PBA writers Nelson Beltran of the Philippine Star, Dodo Catacutan and Badong Hilario of Manila Bulletin and Noli Cortez of Malaya.
The two teams will play alternately the Wack Wack East and West courses with the last two legs serving as championship rounds for each of the two layouts.
With Butch Brodett as rulesman, the event will use Modified Double Peoria, Blind Callaway and System 36 in scoring the first three legs to establish the player handicaps for the championship rounds. A player must complete at least two of the first three legs to get a handicap for the championship rounds.
There will also be individual competition in each leg with trophies and prizes at stake for champions, first runners-up and second runners-up in Classes A, B and C. The Commissioners Cup goes to the medal champion and the Governors Cup to the overall champion.
The scores in two of the first three legs in the two championship rounds will be the basis for the team competition.
The winning score in the team competition will be determined by the average scores of the top six players of each team, who have played at least four legs.
Participants can register at the PBA Office or contact Mr. Dave Coros on or before Monday, April 21,
