Basco cops 18-under title in Head-Penn

Unseeded Michael Basco scored a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 upset win over top seed Jandrick de Castro to capture the boys’ 18-under title yesterday in the 2003 Head-Penn Tennis Tour at the Manila Polo Club.

Basco, however, failed to win the 16-under title after bowing to fourth seed Miguel Narvaez, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

No. 1 Ivy de Castro survived unranked Michelle Pang, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, to win the girls’ 18-under title and No. 2 Jessica Agra took the 16-under title over Ivy de Castro, 6-4, 6-1.

Top seed Trudy Amoranto pocketed the girls’ 14-under title over No. 2 Anna Buenviaje, 6-3, 6-1, while the girls’ 12-under title went to top seed Sarah Jane Lim, who scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Joan Therese Opulencia.

In the boys’ 12-under class, No. 2 Patrick Arevalo upset No. 1 Gerard Michael Ngo, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, to clinch the title while No. 3 Alberto Villamor also pulled off a 6-2, 6-2 reversal over No. 1 Pocholo Macalino to win the unisex 10-under crown.

Meanwhile, registration for the second leg of the Tour slated April 1-5 in Dumaguete City ends at 12 noon today. Players may contact Philta office (tel. No. 5256434) or Praxevilla Tennis Club president John Jalandoni (0918-5081753 and 0920-9067530).
