Cervantes group tops S’woods golf

The four-man team of Pete Cervantes, Isa Velayo, Buddy Velayo and Gilbert Martirez bested 70 other teams out of a record-breaking 282 participants to rule Group 1 of the March monthly tournament at the Legends and Masters courses of Manila Southwoods.

Cervantes and (Isa) Velayo (at the Legends) and Martirez and (Buddy) Velayo (at the Masters) scored a combined net team 134 under the scramble format.

Placing second is the quartet of Wan Sup Park, Soong Jang, II Soo Bae and Soo Hwan Oh with 136 in the 18-hole event supported by hole-in-one sponsors Mitsubishi Motors, Northwest Airlines, Royal Caribbean International-Baron Travel Corp., Thai Airways and Wilson Sports.

"We thank the members and employees of the club, as well as our sponsors, for making this tournament a huge success especially in terms of the number of participants who joined," said Manila Southwoods sports and games chairman Freddie Mendoza.

Nobody won the hole-in-one prizes worth P1.5 million that included a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer, a Bangkok Golf Holiday package, a Wilson Golf Set, and a Mexican-Riviera Cruise with two business-class tickets to Los Angeles, USA.

Former President Fidel V. Ramos went home with a Pioneer DVD Home Theater System which was staked as the grand raffle prize.
