Eight outstanding sportsmen inducted to DLSU Hall of Fame

The De La Salle Alumni Association inducted eight La Salle alumni for their outstanding achievements in sports.

The honorees are Paeng Nepomuceno (HS ’75 ), Noli Caluag (GS ’73, HS ’77, AB ’81), Mark Joseph (HS ’79), Stephen Hontiveros (GS ’59, HS ’63, BSC ’68), Dindo Gonzales (HS ’35, BSC ’38), Celso Dayrit (BSBA ’73, MBA ’78), Bobong Velez (GS ’60, HS ’64), and Eddie Llamas Jr. (GS ’61, HS ’65).

Nepomuceno, a six-time world-bowling champion, won an unprecedented four World Cup championships in three consecutive decades. Caluag represented the Philippines in several taekwondo championships since 1979. In 2000, he retired and became the heavyweight taekwondo champion of California.

Joseph has achieved several awards in the field of swimming while Hontiveros has been an active official of Philippine Bowling Congress since 1979.

Gonzales has been awarded the Golf Hall of Fame in 1990 together with Silverio, Ben Arda, Gunto, Celestino Tugot, Larry Montes and Dominga Capati.

Dayrit is chair of the Philippine Olympic Committee and is recipient of the prestigious PSA Sports Leadership Award. Velez is the founder and chair of Vintage Sports that primarily covers the PBA games.

Llamas Jr. is one of the best goalies produced in the Philippines. He has led La Salle’s junior football team to four straight NCAA championships from 1961-1964. He then played for the Philippine Youth team from 1956-57 and the Philippine National Seniors team from 1967-72.
