SSC netters remain unbeaten

San Sebastian College nailed its sixth straight win last Saturday to gain a share of the lead with Letran in the 78th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The Stags of former World Youth Cup campaigner Frederick Morgan demolished Mapua Institute of Technology, 3-0, after Niño Salvador outclassed Raffy Santiago, 6-1, 6-3, Arvin Ruel and Salvador downed Flint Almiron and Santiago, 6-4, 6-2, and Ruel defeated Paul Vicente Cruz, 8-6.

Philippine Christian University clobbered College of St. Benilde, 3-0, to improve its win-loss record to 4-2. Carlo Estrella rallied past John Rey Moreno, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, Roel Licayan and Ricardo Solon outplayed Juan Vicente Cruz and Moreno, 6-4, 7-6, and Solon whipped Cruz, 8-1.

University of Perpetual Help-Rizal finally barged into the win column by nipping Jose Rizal University, 2-1. Dennis Canaria beat Elmer Torres, 6-1, 6-0, and Harvy Morse and Canaria downed Gian Reynoso and Torres, 6-4, 6-1, while Reynoso conquered Morse, 8-2.

In the juniors division, St. Benilde blasted PCU, 3-0, to remain unbeaten after six games. Jandrick de Castro downed Warren Andrecio, 6-4, 6-1, Lawrence Magaway and Irwin de Guzman survived Beltran Maribojoc and Andrecio, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5, and De Guzman overpowered Maribojoc, 8-1.

San Sebastian picked up its third win at the expense of Mapua, 2-1. Vyaki Sabandon prevailed over Martin Ramos, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, but Jan Inri Grape and Jaime Ochoa won over Raniel Torres and Sabandon, 6-3, 6-4, and Mikoff Manduriao dumped Torres, 6-0, 6-0.

JRU notched its first win courtesy of UPHR, 2-1. Geoffrey Calcita blanked Carlo Esquerra, 6-0, 6-0, John Wenceslao and Calcita downed John Cabali and Esguerra, 6-4, 6-2, while Cabali won over Wenceslao, 8-2.
