Samsung RP inter-school golf launched in Villamor

-
The National Inter-scholastics golf tournament, aimed at discovering fresh talents in both amateur and professional levels, will be revived next month with the corporate backing of Samsung paving the way for its long-awaited return.

The Samsung Inter-scholastics will be held at the Villamor Golf Club in the third week of February with about 20 of the biggest schools in Metro Manila confirming their participation in the college, high school and elementary levels.

In a recent organizational meeting among team captains, Philippine Sports Commission chair Eric Buhain gave his nod to the revival of the project, saying athletes need a continuing cycle of events to be able to maximize their full potential.

"The Inter-scholastics is something we really need. It’s a boost to talent development. It ensures a steady turnover of talents from grade school, then to high school and college," Buhain said.

Buhain also extolled Samsung for its unwavering support for golf and local sports as a whole: "The support of Samsung is reviving the trust and confidence of business community in supporting local sports."

For his part, Sang Youl Eom, president and CEO of Samsung Electronics Philippines, expressed hopes that their sponsorship will lead to something bigger for young Filipino golfers.

"Samsung will always be there to help in the search for a Filipino Tiger Woods or Se Ri Pak. While the Inter-scholastics will give them the chance to fight for school pride, we hope to see them carry the Philippine flag in competitions abroad in the future."

Among those who attended the initial meeting were new Rudy Samson and Junie Ledesma of the Federation of Golf Clubs, new Jungolf president Gerry Handog, Jun Dalandan and Jay Arañas, Joseph Evaristo and Buddy de Joya of La Salle and Frank Borromeo of the Poveda Learning Center.

Teams from Ateneo and La Salle make up the bulk of the early entries. Teams from Xavier, OB Montessori, Colegio de San Agustin, Southville International School, Chang Kai Shek and Sto. Nino Learning Center are also expected to join.
