High school chess bets in for acid test

Chess has a close affinity with math and the sciences. In fact, three former world chess champions, and many chess grandmasters for that matter, held doctorate degrees in math and engineering.

What could be more appropriate than to hold a chess tournament at the campus of the country’s premier science high school?

The Active Chess Center of Asia Inc. (ACCA), in cooperation with the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) and the Grandmaster Eugenio Torre Chess Institute (GETCI), in order to instill the value of wholesome competition and the spirit of sportsmanship and to forge friendship and goodwill among the youth, will organize the first High School Chess Team Open tournament Feb. 6-9 at the PSHS along Agham Road, Diliman, Quezon City.

The tournament, which will coincide with the Science and Math Week of the PSHS, is open to private and public high schools.

Each team is allowed to field four regular players and two alternates. Teams may be all boys, all girls, or boys and girls combinations. Each high school may field a maximum of two teams. Each team is required to bring at least two tournament size chess sets and at least two chess clocks.
