Can Wind Blown register his third straight Presidential Gold Cup?

The question will be answered today when the 30th edition of the most prestigious – and richest – race in the land is run today over 2,000 meters at San Lazaro.

But first one question must be answered: Can John Cordero, who rode Wind Blown in a prep race over 1,900 meters carrying 59 kilograms at San Lazaro two weeks ago, take his new-found gold mine another 100 meters carrying top weight of 62 kilograms against 11 other quality horses?

To most bettors who will install him as favorite today, the answer is "Yes."

Hermie Esguerra, his owner, also thinks "Yes," although Wind Blown will be coming out of post position No. 7, with speedsters San Diego Force and Staunch Ally not likely to give him a favored spot near the rail or allow him to dictate the pace.

At any rate, a victory for Wind Blown will mean a P1.5 million bonanza from the total of P2.375 million.

Other contenders are Hyperbid, Silver Story, Lord of All, Lyonnais, San Diego Force, Golden Eagle, Free Wind, Perfect Storm, Staunch Ally, What A Spell, Golden Ballet and Kitty Hawk.

Runner-up will receive P500,000; P250,000 for third; and P125,000 for fourth.

No less than President Arroyo, the event’s honoree, is expected to grace the P2.3-million classic race and award the coveted Presidential Gold Cup to the connections of this year’s champion race horse. — Ramon Romualdez
