UST Tigers snap Archers’ tennis streak

Defending champion University of Santo Tomas snapped De La Salle’s three-game winning streak yesterday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s tennis tournament at the Rizal Sports Complex.

The Growling Tigers of Karl Santamaria scored a 3-0 victory over the Green Netters of Roland Kraut and forged a three-way tie for the lead with Ateneo de Manila at 3-1.

Pius Ocampo outclassed Yannick Guba, 6-1, 6-1, in the first singles while Art Thomas Calingsan and Francis Venzon rallied past Andre Rommel Cruz and Marcial Gino Alimario, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the doubles. Maclean Barraquias capped the win with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 decision over Nico Faller.

University of the Philippines broke a two-game losing spell with a 3-0 victory over University of the East. The Red Warriors absorbed their fourth consecutive loss.

Jim Rellona clobbered Christian Jose Banato, 6-0, 6-0, Nathaniel Guadayo and Raymund Remigio survived Jerry Bernabe and Peter John Perpetua, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Alexander Borela downed Teddy Danao, 6-1, 8-2.

In the women’s division, De La Salle stunned reigning champion UST, 2-1, to remain unbeaten after three games. The Tigresses fell to second place with 2-1.

Berry Sepulveda won 6-0 over Ziarla Battad, who retired after the first set due to stomach cramps.
